Proposed 2010-2011 School Calendar
CALENDAR EXPLANATION 2010-11
The draft proposal for the 2010-11 calendar is based upon the current calendar. After getting input from parents and staff members, the following are the key points that highlight similarities and differences between the current calendar and the proposal:
1. The first semester ends at the Winter Break. Academically, this works better for students in regards to the alternative of coming back and trying to pick up for two more weeks.
2. Spring Break cannot be aligned with the Easter Holiday. MHS must undergo mandatory state testing immediately after Easter and it would not be appropriate for students to return on Tuesday and begin high stakes testing on Wednesday.
3. Parent/Teacher conferences were moved from the end of the first and third quarter. The first conference was moved to earlier so that students, parents and teachers can focus upon expectations for the year and goal setting. The third quarter conference was moved earlier so that there would be more time before the end of the year to make any necessary adjustments/interventions to help students succeed.
4. Columbus Day would become an attendance day to add one more instructional day to the first quarter. More districts are waiving this holiday and the state has made it easier to attend school on this day.
5. Two additional half-days were added to the calendar for teacher inservice. In 2008-09 there were seven half-days which were considered excessive. This year, there were three half-days and that has seemed to be too few to work district-wide on important initiatives. The proposed calendar has five half-days which should allow time for both grade level/subject area meetings as well as work on district initiatives. The days were spaced on the calendar so as to reduce interruptions and were kept on Wednesdays which is the normal early release day.
6. The second Institute day has been moved to immediately after Winter Break. This will allow teachers to focus on goal-setting for second semester, implementation strategies, and to conclude necessary work from the first semester.
Please review this proposed calendar and then take our brief survey about it.
