Four Moline schools earn “Spotlight Awards"
Lincoln-Irving, Logan, Washington and Willard Elementary Schools have been recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education for outstanding academic achievement. The "Spotlight Award" is given to schools that meet the following criteria:
- 50 percent of students considered in the low-income range in 2006
- 60 percent of students met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics during the 2006 school year
- 50 percent of students met or exceeded state standards in both reading and mathematics in both 2004 and 2005
- the school has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as required by the No Child Left Behind Act in 2005 and 2006
The Illinois State Board of Education has been honoring spotlight schools since 2003 as a way of recognizing high poverty schools where high academic performance is closing the “achievement gap.”
Lincoln-Irving Elementary School also has received an Academic Improvement Award. The recognition is given to schools that have sustained an upward trend in test scores for at least three years and have shown a 7.5 point increase this year, or a 15 point increase in scores for the past three years.
“We are proud of the outstanding work of the teachers, staff, students and administration in these and all of our schools,” Superintendent Cal Lee said. “The award is a well-deserved recognition of their efforts.”
