Wilson Flags

ADVISOR: This is Mrs. Michele McKee's 24th year as volunteer coach of the Wilson Flag Corps.

MEMBERS: Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders have the opportunity to participate on the Wilson Flag Corps, but we are limited to 15 members. In the event that more than 15 students signing up to participate, there will be auditions to determine the final performing group.

CLINICS/AUDITIONS: The Flag Corps season will begin at Band Camp August 6th through August 10th (9:00 to 11:00 a.m.). Those interested will meet near the band room just inside the main entrance. All participants should come prepared for warm weather including comfortable clothes, tennis shoes, and WATER!

Auditions will cover the basics the flag movements, commands, and one or two routines (Wilson Fight Song, Moline High School Fight Song) that are taught during the first two days of Flag Corps Clinics. Students who are interested in joining the squad MUST also commit to the following performances:

• Friday, August 31st - Moline Marching Band Festival - Half-time at the MHS football game
  Browning Field (1800 - 20th Avenue) - 6:00 p.m. until after half-time performance

• Friday, September 7th - Ericsson Elementary School Celebrate Education Parade
  Starting and ending at Ericsson School (335 - 5th Avenue) - 9 a.m.

• Friday, September 14th - Moline High School Homecoming Parade
  Starts at Moline High School at 2 p.m. - Ends at Wharton Field House by 3:30 p.m.

• Sunday, October 21st - Moline Dad's Club Halloween Parade
  Starts at Moline High School at 2 p.m. - Ends at Wharton Field House by 3:30 p.m.

• November Date TBD - Wilson Band and Orchestra Concert
  Wilson Auditorium - 7 p.m.

PRACTICES: The Wilson Flags Corps will have practices most every day after school from 3:45 until 5 p.m. throughout the months of August and September. They will become less frequent after Homecoming as we will be mainintaining and not necessarily learning new routines.

Since Mrs. McKee serves as the Computer Specialist for the building, the computer lab is kept open from 3:15 to 3:45 daily. Flag Corps members will be required to be in the computer lab (B215) from 3:15 to 3:45 or seeking help from another staff member. They are to utilize this time as a study hall and are NOT to be loitering in the building. At 3:45 p.m., we will move to our practice area behind the building just outside the band room/music wing.

Flag Corps members MUST attend practices. Members not in attendance prior to an event may not perform.

UNIFORM: The cost of participating in the Wilson Flag Corps is approximately $20.00. This fee will obtain a Wilson Flags T-shirt and a participation pin at the end of the season. The t-shirt (black unless we find just the right shade of gold) will be worn for performances.

Along with the t-shirt, members MUST have long, plain, black pants (no jeans/sweats), black socks, and all black shoes. Simple black dress shoes or tennis shoes (all black) are sufficient. I recently saw some at Wal-mart or Target for $10.00. Above all, make sure they are comfortable to walk in!!!

PERFORMANCE FLAGS: Wilson currently has plain, rectangular flags of gold and black. In the future, we would like to purchase performance flags. They cost upwards of $50 a piece. Your flag corps member may be asked to participate in a band fundraiser to earn money for new performance gear.
