The best way to predict your future is to create it~
Abraham LincolnDuring the spring of the 2022-2023 school year, approximately 80 stakeholders (parents, students, staff and community partners) shared their perspective on what students need for success in this rapidly changing world. These stakeholders helped the District identify what core competencies are most important in our community for our students to master before graduating. In addition, the group assisted with defining each competency to ensure they become an integral part of teaching and learning in our district. A Portrait of a Graduate allows staff to prioritize these essential skills and qualities; it places the students at the heart of our work; and it serves as the focal point for the District’s strategic planning.

Creating the Portrait was just the first step and this coming year, we are excited to take this compelling vision-setting work to the next level.

Communication

Uses language that is clear, concise, easy to follow and considers the cultural, linguistic, and social backgrounds of others
Has the confidence to express one’s viewpoints as well as ensures that the viewpoints of others are considered and acknowledged
Recognizes and understands different tones and types of communication including electronic communication, verbal and non-verbal cues, body language
Effectively listens, seeks clarification, and gives time for people to process their thoughts
Exercise patience, understanding, and acceptance of the viewpoints of others even when they differ from one’s own

Participates in career exploration and experiential work-based learning activities to increase preparedness for success after high school
Assesses, identifies, and evaluates strengths, qualities, and interests to align with well-suited career pathways
Applies essential academic, technical, and soft skills learned to find, acquire, maintain, and grow within a career

Responsibility

Financial Literacy

Understands personal finance and the methods to earn, spend, save, and invest, in order to address personal needs such as shelter and food, over wants
Knows the impact of personal economic choices on oneself and others
Recognizes the role of money in society, including debt versus credit
Applies financial understanding in order to live independently and accomplish goals

Perseverance

Problem Solving

Identifies the issue, creates a plan to address it
Divides larger tasks into multiple steps, stays focused, and monitors the solution
Evaluates various possibilities to identify the root cause of the problem
Reframes the problem through multiple perspectives, and embraces trial & error
Applies prior experiences to create possible solutions either individually or as a team
