FAQ - LEAD Moline

Students in KDG through 12th grade are included in the LEAD Moline program.  Each year, students in 2nd, 6th, and 9th grade will receive a device to be used for instructional purposes.  Students in KDG and 1st grades will use classroom carted devices that are touchscreen to better help our primary students utilize technology. Our teachers have had specific technology training on how to integrate the devices into their curriculum and they are aware of the LEAD Moline standards, policies, and purpose. LEAD Moline has been developed to focus on instruction and new ways to deliver instruction to students using technology.  Students within the LEAD Moline program are issued a Chromebook, however, the device itself is just a vehicle to deliver instruction.  As technology changes and more curriculum is implemented, it is possible the district will change that device or even allow personal devices.

The Chromebook will change depending on the grade level.  For instance, KDG and 1st grades will use a touchscreen device that remains in the classroom.   Each year, students in 2nd, 6th, and 9th grade are issued a standard Chromebook that they will use for 4 years.  These devices may change by grade level due to product availability, but the overall function of the devices will be the same.    

Students in grades 2-12, yes! In fact, this is a requirement as per the Student Device Handbook.  Students are responsible for making sure their device is charged and ready for the next day.  Students are also responsible for keeping their devices safe and in good working condition.

Students in KDG and 1st grade will not take their touchscreen devices home.  However, they are still issued a device and they are taught the LEAD Moline guidelines for safe use of the device, proper care, and proper maintenance.  When primary students reach 2nd grade, they are well-versed in the take-home procedures.  

For grades 2-12, YES!  LEAD Moline strives to provide 24/7 access to instructional resources and learning.  We believe there are learning opportunities available, even when school is not in session.  If the guardian would rather the device is stored over the summer, please contact the school's office to make arrangements.  

The Device Maintenance fee is an annual charge that covers the cost of two (2) repairs each year that are the result of normal wear and tear or manufacturer defect.  Repairs are tracked by the Educational Technology Department and the student-led help desks.  Any repairs beyond the 2 per year will be reviewed and if deemed necessary, charged to the student's family/guardian. 

ANY repair required due to neglect or abuse will be automatically charged to the family/guardian.  The student will be issued a loaner device until that repair is covered.  Loaner devices MUST be returned at the end of each day.  Loaner devices are not allowed to leave the school for any reason. 

The District does have some used parts at a discounted price, including full replacements.  Please contact the school office or the Educational Technology Department (creid@molineschools.org) for more information about parts and parts billing.

If a device is stolen, the first step is to file a police report and give that information to the Dean or Principal of the building.  The incident should also be reported to the Educational Technology Department for tracking.  Lost or stolen devices are not covered under the Device Maintenance Fee and will be the responsibility of the student's family/guardian.  Students may check a loaner device out, however, that device will not be allowed to leave the school grounds.  

Students at Moline High School, Deere, and Wilson should visit the Student-Led Helpdesk when a repair is required.  A support ticket will be created and a repair started.  Often, the student will get a loaner device or their own repaired device that same day.  

Elementary students will report the damaged device to their teacher and an appropriate support ticket will be created.  Each school will have a limited number of loaner devices available. 

As long as the repair is not the result of neglect or abuse AND there have not been more than two other repairs within the school year, the repair will be covered.

In instances when the guardian is billed for parts, the District will make every attempt to repair the device with used parts at a discounted price.  These parts are limited.  Please contact the school office or the Educational Technology Department (creid@molineschools.org) for questions about available parts and parts billing.  

The Chromebooks are on a 4-year hardware cycle as described below. 

• KDG and 1st Grade: touchscreen carted devices that are not taken home and will be replaced every 4 years. 
• 2nd grade: Device issued will remain with the student through 5th grade.  Devices will be collected for parts at the end of the 5th grade school year.
• 6th grade: Device issues will remain with the student through 8th grade.  Devices collected at the end of 8th grade will become spare devices for LEAD Moline
• 9th grade: Devices issued will remain with student through 12th grade.  Students and their parents/guardians have the option to keep their device after graduation provided all academic and financial requirements are met (i.e. all fees are paid). 

Any student withdrawing from the District is expected to return the device, case, and charger to the Student-Led Helpdesk or building Administrator.  Students will have the option to purchase the Chromebook at a pro-rated amount if they so choose.  Please contact your building Administrator, or email Craig Reid, Director for Technology, creid@molineschools.org, for more information regarding the buy-back program.

YES!  We currently use GoGuardian's content filter, which filters the device whether on or off-campus.  GoGuardian provides a ton of useful reporting and content filtering.  For more information about GoGuardian, including options for guardians to manage filtering at home, please visit the Goguardian Home Page.

NO!  The district issues devices to a student for the purpose of tracking.  Any device that is damaged, lost or stolen must be reported to the school and any parts to repair the device must come from the District.  Chargers are specific to the device and a third-party charger may cause additional hardware failure or fire.

The District does have a procedure in place for families that require financial assistance.  Please discuss this with your student's Principal.   The goal of LEAD Moline is to focus on the curriculum and not the device.  All efforts will be made to provide a device to the students within the program.
