1. Can I be employed as a substitute teacher if I don’t have a degree in education?
Yes. If you have earned a bachelor’s degree in a subject area other than education you are still eligible to substitute teach in Moline-Coal Valley School District. Please keep in mind that those substitute teachers who do have a degree in education will be given first priority when filling substitute teacher vacancies.
2. How do I obtain an Illinois substitute teaching license? Requirements:
- Must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
- Valid for substitute teaching in all grades of the public schools, prekindergarten through grade 12.
- Note: Substitute licenses are valid for 5 years, and may be renewed with the payment of registration fees.
3. If I hold a professional educator license or educator with stipulations, am I qualified to be a substitute teacher?
- If you hold a valid professional educator license with stipulations that required a bachelor’s degree for issuance, you are qualified to be a substitute teacher. You do not need to hold a substitute teaching license.
- Short Term Substitute Teaching License Requirement: Must hold an Associate’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or show completion of 60 semester hours of coursework.
- Valid for substitute teaching in all grades of the public schools, prekindergarten through grade 12
- Short-Term Substitute licenses are valid until June 30, 2023, and may NOT be renewed.
- Cannot teach more than 5 consecutive days per licensed teacher.
- Must complete a training program provided by the school board.
- Cannot serve as a Paraprofessional.

4. What is the process to become a substitute teacher for Moline-Coal Valley School District?
Our Human Resources Office is located on the 1st floor of Allendale and is staffed Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. All applicants must be fingerprinted at the Regional Office of Education located at 3430 Avenue of the Cities, Moline, IL 61265. Fingerprinting is paid for by the applicant at a cost of $60.00 payable by cash or credit card only. Fingerprint results are then mailed to the applicant. Substitute teacher applicants need to bring the following items to Allendale: a teaching license registered in Rock Island County, a copy of college transcripts, results of a physical and TB test completed within the last 90 days, 2 forms of required identification, and your fingerprint results stamped with the ROE seal. The applicant’s name will be placed on the Board agenda for approval at the next Board of Education meeting.
5. All new applicants will be required to complete an online training program before they are allowed to substitute in a classroom. The online training course must be completed at Allendale. 1900 52nd Ave. Moline, IL. Applicants will be reimbursed for their time.
6. What is the rate of pay for substitute teachers?
The Daily rate for a full day of substitute teaching is $120.00, half day $60.00. Those substituting a minimum of 10 consecutive days for the same teacher will receive long- term pay of $140.00 per day. Retired Teacher substitute pay $150.00 per day.
